"The Aquaculture in Action program was developed in 1998 by the MD Sea Grant Extension Program to enhance professional development for teachers in the area of recirculating aquaculture and start a network of schools that can use aquaculture as a tool for teaching science and other related concepts. The program is designed for K-12 teachers to gain "first-hand" experience with aquaculture and how it can be used as a "tool for teaching" science concepts at all grade levels. Teachers learn applied skills, build their own 210-gallon recirculating system, and gain significant content knowledge through the course of a one-week workshop and then receive support throughout the school year from MD Sea Grant Extension program staff. The AinA program engages teachers and students in topics including:

  • Building and maintaining a recirculating system
  • Monitoring and correcting water quality problems in aquaculture
  • Designing systems that incorporate aquaponics
  • Learning techniques for handling fish and using anesthesia
  • Calculating the size of a biological filter
  • Determining biological loading capacity of a recirculating system
  • Learning the role of bacterial biofilms in biological filtration
  • Measuring fish growth using appropriate methods
  • Learning how to use the on-line database for Aquaculture in Action
